California bans hotels from dispensing single-use ‘personal care’ bottles!

SUCCESS!!!!!

AB-1162 was signed into law this week! That means California hotels will no longer be allowed to offer small single-use plastic bottles in their establishments.

After January 1, 2023 it will be illegal for hotels with 50 or more rooms to distribute any single-use plastic ‘personal care’ bottles (shampoo, conditioner, lotion etc.) For hotels or shared rooms with less than 50 rooms, this law goes into effect on January 1st, 2024. Hotels caught dispensing the small plastic bottles after these dates will face fines up to $500-per-day.

These products will still be available to guests, they will just be dispensed in refillable containers which will create significantly less plastic waste. Many hotels, including the Disney chain, have already begun using refillable dispensers. Marriott International has pledged to swap out single use plastic bottles all their hotels by December 2020.

Govorner Newsom signed AB-1162, coined the “Lodging establishments: personal care products: small plastic bottles” into law on October 9th, 2019.
