International tourist travel is becoming increasingly popular worldwide. In 2019, most cities had record breaking tourist levels, including San Francisco. According to SF Travel, “Total Visitor Volume Hits 25.8 Million, up 1.2 Percent. Visitor Spending Exceeds $10 Billion, up 2.4 Percent.”
However, traveling comes with a large environmental price tag. Fuel emissions from airplanes alone are easily the biggest aspect of my “carbon footprint,” as it is for many.

We are more likely to slip up when we travel
Whether we are traveling for business, pleasure, or bleasure, being away from home provides ample opportunity for zero waste slip ups. Did we forget to pack our tote bags, razor or water bottle? What about eating out? And most importantly, where should we stay when we get there?
One important thing to note when booking a room a hotel is that it’s okay to call and request to NOT have your room supplied with plastic shampoo bottles and toiletries. It’s also really important to do you research. Just because a hotel says its eco-conscious doesn’t mean it actually is. You may still need to #RefuseTheStraw at the hotel restaurant and carry your own take away containers for any leftovers if they are still using plastics.
